Big Box Boycott: Choose Community Over Corporate Greed (Nov 28–Dec 2)
This holiday season, we’re invited to shift our habits, rethink our spending, and put our values into action. For five days— from November 28 through December 2— local community organizers in Charlotte are calling on our community to participate in a Big Box Boycott, choosing people and place over corporate profit. It’s a simple idea with real impact: support local businesses, uplift our neighbors, and invest in the kind of economy we want to see grow.
The campaign— shaped around five themed days— offers a clear roadmap for participating:
Friday, Nov 28 – Block Friday
Instead of jumping into the frenzy of Black Friday sales, we’re encouraged to skip the big box deals and buy from local shops, artisans, and makers. Every dollar spent locally stays in the community and supports real families.
Saturday, Nov 29 – Small Business Saturday
This is the heart of the campaign: supporting small, independently owned businesses. Whether it’s a bookstore, coffee shop, boutique, repair shop, or restaurant, today is about celebrating the businesses that give Charlotte its character and soul.
Sunday, Nov 30 – Service Sunday
This day is dedicated to community volunteering and giving back. You can join a service project, donate your time or resources, or find small ways to care for the people in your neighborhood.
Monday, Dec 1 – Cut the Cord Monday
Instead of jumping on Cyber Monday deals, the invitation is simple: skip the online mega-retailers unless the business is local. Take a pause before clicking “buy,” and consider where your money goes—and who it supports.
Tuesday, Dec 2 – Give Big Tuesday
Close out the week by donating to local causes, nonprofits, and organizations doing good work in our community. Even small contributions make a meaningful impact.
Together, these five days form a powerful statement: We believe in community over corporations, and we are willing to act on that belief. If you’re looking for a list of local Charlotte businesses to support, visit NoKingsCLT.com.
If this resonates with you, share the idea, invite a friend, and help us spread the word. The Big Box Boycott is more than a week of action—it’s a reminder that we can shape the kind of community we want, one intentional choice at a time.
